With 10 players still young enough to play at the U12 level, the 2014 14B Lightning team not only exceeded expectations, they annihilated them on their way to a 9-5 record. Even the losses to the top teams were decided by just a run or two.
Flamethrowers Lauren Meinhold and Marta Conoby blew the competition away with their awesome pitching. Also had the 3rd and 4th highest batting averages.
Lydia Margolien proved she can also be a top-notch pitcher and had a .500 OBP leading the team in walks at the plate.
Premiere catchers Lizzy Hardy and Rory Butler did the honors of playing field generals.
Devan Sluyski's hard work was evident at 2nd base and as a premier contact hitter.
Isabel Silverman and Allie Pearson proved to be two of the most consistent players at the plate and a variety of positions in the field.
Gail Humphreys and Erika Burnham patrolled the outfield like all-stars along with Samantha Long, who again made several spectacular defensive plays!
Hitting leaders Emily Dennison (.583 BA) and Lena Benway (.571 BA) also led the team in EXTRA BASE HITS and RBI respectively.
Divya Bhade flashed her speed, tearing up the base paths as usual.
Kate Bettez had a nice .471 OBP and was 2nd on the team with 9 RBI.
Claire Langin was one of our most complete players with a .545 OBP and 8 steals. Oh yeah, she was also our starting shortstop!
The young 2014 Acton-Boxborough U10 Lightning team had a great summer season. The girls started the season against a very experienced Littleton team; impressed by their opponent’s performance the Lightning team quickly learned how the game was to be played. At the following game the Lightning picked up their first win against Lexington. The team worked hard and continued to play good softball but falling short a few runs early on in the season led to some close loses. By mid-July the confident Lightning team found their stride as they went undefeated in the last 5 games of the season. The team’s pitching was led by Taylor Flannery, Michelle Mazzu, and Maya Benway. Together the three girls logged 115 strike outs in the books. Rebecca Kniker, Lily Newcombe and Jessica Fredricks controlled the game with strong protection behind the plate. Cailey Ryan and Elsa Grant managed the corners of the field at 1st and 3rd while great infielding by Sarah Verner, Kathleen Mazzu, Song Leav, Jenny Baum and Lauren Baum closed the gaps. All of the girls were making contact with the ball towards the end of the season, driving in runs with excitement and stealing bases with pride. Congratulations to our young Lightning team for an impressive season!
